Black Barbie for Italian Vogue

Franca Sozzani, Editor-in-Chief of Italian Vogue said that it is because of Barbie's iconic generational status that he wanted to dedicate the the July 2009 issue to her and there is no better way to keep in step with the times than to use Black Barbie to represent the issue.

A decision no doubt due to the success of last summer’s groundbreaking All Black Issue. An issue to make a statement about the lack of diversity in the fashion industry.

I was so excited to hear about a magazine issue dedicated entirely to black models, I must applaud Mr. Sozzani for doing it again.

Though this years issue is not entirely about black models, a special July supplement focuses on all black Barbies, artistic photography and barbie fashion spreads.

Barbie first came out with a black doll, called "Francie," in 1967, and in 1980 the first black Barbie doll launched. Most Interesting enough is the fact that Mattel Inc. will now be launching their first complete line of all African American dolls, called the "So In Style" dolls due to be released Fall 2009.
